Second Annual Peninsula Edible Gardens Tour, 11 August
a benefit for local food assistance programs
gardens two and five: Two Community Gardens
Community gardens are a fairly new concept here on the Peninsula. The Klipsan Community Garden is a couple of years old (I think) and is used by several Ocean Park families and a girl scout troop. It is behind Jimella and Nancy’s Market Café in the Klipsan Beach neighbourhood. In England, this would be called an allotment patch.
I grew up in the Seattle of P-Patches so am used to the concept. The Seattle community gardens are a lot more exuberant and colourful than these, but perhaps these will grow into that in a few years. I especially remember the beauty of the P-Patch near Allan’s parents’ former home in the Wedgewood neighbourhood and the gorgeous Tilth community gardens in Wallingford.
After the Klipsan stop, we toured two more gardens whose entries will follow this one. On the way home we took a quick look at a very recent addition to the community gardens of the Peninsula. It is brand new this year, but has potential. At 11th and Oregon, it is only a block from my mom’s old garden. I happen to know that the neighbours right by this pea patch are gardeners themselves, so it must be fun for them to observe its creation.
Now back to the rest of the tour: a small and a very large edible garden…
Really really cool! Will there be a tour this year, too?

I believe so. If it follows the schedule of previous years, it will be the second Saturday in August.
