Before we went to work, Allan had his Moto Guzzi trailered off to a repair shop on Sandridge Road.
Much as I wanted to finish the Long Beach berms, we chose to go north to more sheltered jobs because of a brisk wind and somewhat chilly weather. On the way, we stopped off at The Basket Case to peruse a plant availability list. Fred and Nancy had acquired a new line of Mexican folk garden art.
I could not resist the “Garden” sign, below:
Fred and Nancy told me they planned to open for the season on Thursday, March 5th!
Klipsan Beach Cottages
Our first task today: to cut back the sword and deer ferns at Klipsan Beach Cottages.
The KBC ferns all still looked green and good, unlike the crispy brown ones at the Boreas Inn and other jobs. They needed to be cut, anyway, if we were to see the delightful uncurling of the new fronds and not end up with old, tired ferns in midsummer. I cut back some large ferns in the swale, and Allan pruned a leggy white Escallonia ‘Iveyi’.
My new not very expensive Olympus pocketcam had arrived, and yet because I did not want to learn a New Thing, I took “Spot”, my Canon pocketcam, to work. I think it really is time to retire Spot from outdoor photos:
Golden Sands Assisted Living
We made our first wake up call to the courtyard garden at Golden Sands. Here it is from Google Earth; the courtyard is the area with the oval walkway, completely enclosed by the building.
The temperature dropped radically around three o clock. It was a long walk down two corridors and across a parking lot back to the van to get my jacket, so I just soldiered on with much complaining.
Before we left, I had a chat with a resident named Ann. She’s the one who requested that we bring back my mother’s old three tiered plant table. After my mother died, it had fallen into disuse and we had taken it home. Now it’s back and Ann is filling it up with plants.
I was glad to be done and to drop by Kathleen’s cottage, where we discussed dinner possibilites and settled on going to Long Beach Thai for an early repast. Allan and I had not been there since it changed ownership about two years ago. How did that much time slip away? It used to be a favourite of ours till the quality went downhill, and I’m delighted to say that the quality with the new owners and chefs is high again.
On the way home, I decided that we simply had to take Sunday off. I am trying to remember that life is all too short.
Next: a slideshow of Klipsan Beach Cottages gate view throughout 2015.
I am enjoying your blog and work photos. I think I’ll go trim my ferns today!

The pad Thai was indeed delish. Are there any Hellebores at Golden Sands? I need to check for Hellebore seedlings in my garden because I think they’d be nice at GS–some winter color. Love Ann parading her new babies! Must be fun for the other residents.

There is one lovely lonely hellebore at GS. Was thinking how very few gardens I do have the winter flowers I have in my own, because no one but KBC spends the fortune on plants that I do. GS doesn’t have an actual plant budget so most are started from friend like you and MaryBeth and from my garden and my mom’s old garden (from whence came that one hellebore).

I liked the garden at Klipsan Beach Cottages a lot.

Thanks, Mr. T! It has some formal touches, like yours, that really make a good structure to show off the flowers.
