Hardy Plant Society Study Weekend in Salem, Oregon
garden six: Asian Arts-and-Crafts garden
Often when I look at my photos of a garden, I see something I wish I’d had a closer photo of, and then when I look at Allan’s photos, I find just the one I had desired.
A wall was built up along the edge and as you looked down you could see it was quite a drop to the lower level.
Allan went down into the lower part of the garden.
I swiped this photo out of the tour program because we ended up with no photo showing the very lowest level of the garden. Between Allan’s back being wonky and my usual hobbling with the cane, we were hampered photographically this weekend.
We went around the south side of the house to exit.

The neighbour, who also had a lovely garden, was helping out with the tour guests. Friendly gardening neighbours are the best.
I just put a little bowl quite similar to this in the middle of one of my birdbaths at home, and hers gives me the idea of planting it.
As we departed, we cast an appreciative eye over the nice neighbour’s garden next door.
I was impressed with the terracing on this garden, the closely planted small beds of choice plants, and the glorious garden room. I wonder, if I had a reading room like that, would I use it, or would I just look out and see weeds and get busy in the garden?
I love these little garden rooms people make for themselves. So many good ideas out there.

This was one of my favorite gardens of the weekend — and I completely missed that bowl in the bird bath…I love it!
