The Red Barn
We began our usual route by heading north to the Red Barn, this time skipping the Depot garden till tomorrow.
The Planter Box
We crossed the peninsula to Pacific Highway to look for plants and get garden supplies.
I acquired some potting soil for all the new pots that neighbor Alicia gave me, and some gazanias for the post office. I also acquired a lovely small leaved variegated Pieris called ‘Little Heath’.
We swung back over to Sandridge Road to make a social visit to Steve and John’s, which involved poppyseed muffins and coffee and the taking of some photos of them for publicity shots for a “Rhododendrons in Chile” talk which they will be giving in Newport this fall. (As always, Allan’s photos of them turned out the best.)
(We eventually settled on a shade area for the photo, with a species rhododendron in the background.)
They had been working hard in the garden before we arrived, and their next project was going to be tackling another patch of salal, above. Later, Steve sent me this photo:
With our photo mission accomplished along with much rhododendron admiration, Allan and I departed for our next job.
Klipsan Beach Cottages
We made our second social visit of the day. Our friend Debby’s Ocean Park garden had been on last Saturday’s local garden tour. We had been in Aberdeen, so we wanted to stop by and see it all fluffed up as one does for a tour.
Debby regaled us with some hilarious garden tour stories, which I do wish I could repeat! We made plans for her to join us with Patti to visit THE Oysterville garden next Monday. Then we had to depart to fit in one more job.
The Anchorage Cottages
I was pleased that we had gotten the usual Wednesday rounds done along with garden visiting, and in fact we would have had time to fit the Depot garden in as well.
The moon shining through misty clouds was so beautiful that night. Allan went out and got this photo before I could find my shoes:
Ginger’s Garden Diaries
from my mother’s garden diaries of two decades ago
1998 (age 74):
July 20: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Another hot day. I picked berries first. Did laundry. Wrote to MBNA re annual fee. I was busy all day. In the morning, I watered from 9 to 10 and I went out and 7:00 and watered until 9:00. It’s supposed to be hot and hotter the rest of the week. 4+ pkgs raspberries today.
