My goal today, other than getting enough sleep in the morning, was to sift the compost from bin one, thus having one empty bin to start layering green and brown in, as clean clippings are now frequently created by deadheading and tidying. (I do not put weeds in my compost.)
The day started lovely and cool.
Skooter wanted to help.
Bin one looked promising.
Now Frosty wanted some attention.
Two and a quarter hours later, I had sifted and dumped five good wheelbarrows of luscious compost. And then, ominously, the sky brightened.
And out came the sun.
With this much left to go, I went into the house, planning to finish in the evening:
The temperature read 77 degrees, much too hot for me.
I spent the afternoon and into the early evening catching up completely on writing this blog, an unusual occurrence as I tend to run days behind. That took so long that I almost did not make it back outside in time. We had been planning a campfire dinner, but almost as soon as Allan got some corn wrapped in foil, a light rain began. I finished the compost project anyway.
Allan’s photos in the evening:
I realized from the heavy fragrance that my brugmansia had its first flower.
Compost post – my favourite! And a timely reminder that I need to get cracking and turn over one of my bins and prep the empty one for the fall.

Hi Skyler, that is some nice looking compost! Skooter and Frosty must love having you home to follow you around the garden. The brugmansia flower is beautiful. Wish we had some rain here–nothing but sun and smoke from the fires.

We are still in severe drought. The rain was a delight. None in the forecast now and it’s a bit smoky again today. It didn’t used to be this way!

I actually enjoyed reading about composting — I am so starved for a garden. Also miss having cats around. I have Fifi, but she is so old and tired she really doesn’t pay attention to me except when she wants to change from her bed to my lap in the evening. I love her though.

At least she’s a good lap cat? Skooter isn’t much interested and Frosty is a terrible squirmer. But I do love the way they hang out with me in the garden. Sent from my iPhone

I know what you mean about a lap cat. I find mine the perfect perch for a book. I’m fortunate to have one who also keeps me company in the garden but he does tend to get in the way during weeding. Love the mulch!

One needs a relaxed cat, not a squirmer, to prop a book on. 🙂

Always a treat to see some compost work. I think we should see the sieving in action next time.

I will tell Allan we need such a photo. I fear it will be a little while till I have anything to sieve but I’m hoping for a nice surprise at the bottom of bin four. I got one barrow each out of two and three yesterday.

Does Skooter ever actually do more than merely ‘want’ to help? Frost does not even fake it.
That brugmansia looks like one that I got pieces of from a curbside recycling pile. I was not sure if it was a faded pink or a pastel orange. I just took it because it was there.

Skooter has not succeeded in being helpful, unless amusing me counts. Which it might. I have a jade plant I rescued from trimmings in a compost pile.
