Port of Ilwaco
We started with the garden bed that would have the most impact because it had the most ornamental grasses to cut back. Today, with warmer and more comfortable weather, we weeded as we went along the garden beds.

After trimming three santolinas in the chunky river rockscape by the future Ilwaco Bakery, we addressed the trimming and weeding in the long east end bed.

The tide was well out.

After that, we weeded the red lavarockscape at CoHo Charters and then called the first clean up of the Howerton curbside gardens done.
J Crew Cottage
The cottage across the street has gotten a spiffing new black roof this past week. We weeded and cut back sword ferns and Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’.

Look who I found in a hidden corner of the garden. The south facing front garden gathers heat, which must be why Skooter is often over there.

In the back garden, Japanese quince toned well with the neighbors’ camellia.

At home
While Allan dumped the port debris, I clipped more sword (and other) ferns in our back garden.

Allan turned the ferns into fine compost.

I reorganized the work board.

We may have a blog break after this post if a week of rain and wind materializes. Even though I would have preferred a long reading session, I am enjoying rereading what was once my favorite novel, Foul Matter by Joan Aiken. I remembered that I’d loved it because I identified so strongly with the protagonist, Clytie. I had not remembered that it is about her remembering past loves who had died. In her story, Clytie is just in her thirties. In my 60s, I unfortunately can personally relate to that part of the story now. Clytie is also the main character in the suspense thriller that was published in 1967, The Crystal Crow. The follow up, published in 1983, must have been a surprise to readers who did not expect a quieter and more introspective novel. I hope for rain tomorrow so I can finish it in peace!
Spring cleaning in the gardens! Looking good. It’s always interesting to revisit a book. Checked our interlibrary system but “Foul Matter” was not available. Oh, well!

It might be cheap to find an old copy online…or not. And The Crystal Crow is a must read before it. The paperback I have has the classic scene of a woman in a white gown running through a gothic setting.

You got a lot of work done! Do you ever use your Stihl trimmer to cut back the ornamental grasses and to trim santolinas? That was funny you found Skooter in the garden at the J Crew Cottage!

I use the Stihl for all the santolinas and most ornamental grasses. Allan likes to use the hedge shears on the bigger ornamental grassss.
