Long Beach
On the Bolstad beach approach road, we cut back ornamental grasses and pulled Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ and wild lupine foliage and fixed some bad pruning on some mugo pines.
We kept our resolve to not weed. After all, Monty Don said long grass is the best thing you can do for insects. As the rugosa roses leaf out, a lot of the “weeds” will be hidden.
The job took us one day, not the thirteen or so days it used to take us to weed the whole thing.
For the story of why the garden is almost all rugosa roses, see this post from 2007.
Today’s work can pretty much be told without words…including some darling dogs we got to pet. I think back to our last time of thoroughly weeding this garden two years ago, in 2020. The pandemic was bearing down on us and we felt a sense of growing doom. We got the job done just before the lockdown happened and we became unemployed for awhile. Now there is a different sort of feeling of doom because of the war that seems might possibly lead to nuclear warfare, who knows? We just try to focus on the gardens when events are so far beyond our control.

We finished by bringing some mulch.

The work board tonight:

That’s such a lovely tour of the beach approach. You work so hard!

Horrible world events right now. I made StandWithUkraine signage for the front yard, and donated to one of the humanitarian charities. I thought about adding some sort of blue flags to the beds full of tete a tetes, But at times that sense of impending doom, or numbing horror, moves me to a strange state of inertia, and I just cannot get motivated to do anything, including in the garden.
Have you thought about just adding wildflower seeds to the beach approach beds, and then just leaving them in situ?

The problem is the beds are solid grass undergrowth now. Nowhere for seeds to germinate. I’ve tried wildflowers before but they jute get walked on in any open space. You know how it goes!

You got a good dose of sunshine to help you along.

I can relate to your thoughts on the pandemic and possible nuclear warfare. About all one can do is keep working and living life one day at a time, taking it as it comes delivered.
I’ve had to leave the long grass all winter due to a bad shoulder, which is slowly healing. Monty Don is right, though! I have a few weeks here to start seeing what I can and cannot do at this point. Weather has been up and down. It was 26 degrees here yesterday morning, hitting 72 in the afternoon. That is quite a swing for this time of year. This morning is 30 degrees and clear, with rain forecast for the afternoon.

I hope you heal so that you can do what you love this season, spring through autumn.

Smart decision to not weed the beach approach. One day instead of 13 or more is awesome! It must be fun seeing all the cute dogs.
